In the recently unveiled teaser trailer for "The Six Triple Eight," Kerry Washington plays the strong captain of the first and only unit of color in the Women's Army Corps to be deployed overseas in World War II, Major Charity Adams. Tyler Perry is the director and producer of the movie, which will have a limited theatrical release beginning on December 6 before making its Netflix premiere on December 20.
"The Six Triple Eight" chronicles the incredible journey of 855 Black and women of color who made up the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. Managing a backlog of 17 million undeliverable letters to American soldiers was the battalion's difficult assignment; it called for not just their commitment but also their fortitude in the face of widespread sexism and prejudice.
As they are ready to board a ship for their overseas mission, Washington's character in the movie gives a stirring speech that perfectly captures the battalion's commitment and inspires her regiment to go ahead. The story emphasizes how the battalion's valiant and effective attempts to deliver letters under difficult circumstances significantly contributed to raising soldier morale.
This is Tyler Perry's fourth film with Netflix, and it is inspired by Kevin M. Hymel's article "Fighting a Two-Front War" that appeared in WWII History Magazine. It seeks to perpetuate the heritage of the 6888th battalion and highlight their unsung bravery.
Along with prominent performances by Susan Sarandon, Dean Norris, Sam Waterston, Oprah Winfrey, and Kylie Jefferson, the cast also has a dynamic ensemble that includes Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, and Kylie Jefferson. Along with Kerry Washington and Peter Guber as executive producers, the production team also includes Nicole Avant, Angi Bones, and Keri Selig.
"The Six Triple Eight" seems to be an inspiring narrative of bravery and tenacity that illuminates an important but little-known period in American military history.
