Bungie Unveils Marathon Gameplay and Announces Release Date

Bungie has shown its new shooter game, Marathon. Before Bungie made Halo, it worked on shooters like Pathways Into Darkness and the Marathon series. With Destiny keeping them busy for years, Bungie is now returning to its roots with Marathon's reboot.

Fans heard about Bungie's new Marathon for years but knew little about it. After Bungie ended Destiny 2's main story with the Final Shape last year, many hoped for Marathon news. Now, the wait is over as Bungie has opened up about Marathon, sharing what it is and when it will release.

Bungie says Marathon will come out on September 23. It is an extraction shooter at heart. Players choose from six "runners," which are the game's characters. Teams of three players explore maps filled with tough NPCs and other players. Player numbers change by map, but the Dire Marsh map shown at the reveal supports up to 18 in one match. Collect loot and escape to win.

Marathon has a bright look, unlike many shooter games today. Players can use many weapons and special moves to defeat foes. Some attacks are similar to those in Destiny. Based on what's revealed, fans of Bungie's smooth gunplay have much to look forward to.

Still, some are unsure about Marathon. Comments on the trailer compare it to Sony's failed Concord. It's too early to say if Marathon will meet hopes, but fans can try it before September 23. A closed alpha for invited players happens on April 23.
