Some reports from a well-informed source have hinted that the next God of War game might take Kratos back to the Greek domain. It is believable that instead of all the latest gods in the next series of games, the Greek God of War games could, this time around, devote themselves to shedding some light on a story that was inconclusive in the 2018 reboot. The saga of Kratos and his quest for revenge in the God of War trilogy is known to anyone who has been involved in gaming history. Indeed, the story reached its climax with 2010's God of War 3, after which Santa Monica Studio put out God of War Ascension in 2013. This prequel was the last one set in Greece, with the Norse pantheon emerging in 2018 after Santa Monica Studio's soft reboot of the franchise. The Norse saga concluded with God of War Ragnarok, which was released in 2022. Since then, Kratos' next incarnation has been a matter of much speculation for fans.
Egypt is currently the most probable location for the next God of War title, but recent gossips suggest otherwise. On the recently dropped Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, the highly credible Tom Henderson, who has been a strong influencer in the games industry, denied Egypt as the upcoming center for the next game, and he also said that the next God of War would be placed in Greece and the younger Kratos would be the central character. The story will allegedly be about the relationship between Kratos and his father, so that wouldn't be much of a clue given the events leading up to and around God of War 3.
Interestingly, Henderson could not give any details if the talked-about game was to be a new prequel of the Greek storyline or if it would be an addition to the remastering of the old God of War games. Sometimes journalists cannot fully confirm the accuracy of such items, so there is a slight possibility that Henderson's statement may refer to a remaster of a Greek God of War game as a new prequel. The respondent gave a disclaimer that he was not fully sure about the veracity of the information, which means that a good part of what he said might be just a rumor.
If Santa Monica Studio indeed plans to return to Greece for the next God of War game, this might be a chance to explain or resolve the still-vague plot thread of Kratos in the Norse lands after the end of God of War 3. The hint in God of War is that Kratos simply got on a boat and went to Midgard, but in 2021's God of War: Fallen God comic book, it is hinted that the Egyptian pantheon was in fact around at that time. Thus, Santa Monica Studio has quite a lot of material to craft a prequel story for Kratos that will hopefully at last give us an explanation for how he got to the Norse lands, but only the upcoming time will show which way the studio heads.
